Alpha Battery Commander
CPT James R. Cleary


 

Captain James R. Cleary was born in Silver Springs, Maryland and grew up in Virginia. Captain Cleary was commissioned through Officer Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in May of 2006. He is a graduate of West Virginia University and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.

Captain Cleary began his military career in 1993 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an Anti Tank Assaultman where he served in a Light Armored Reconnaissance Unit.  Upon commissioning in 2006 Captain Cleary was assigned to Attack Company, 1st Battalion 38th Infantry Regiment part of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Lewis Washington.While serving with A/1-38 IN, Captain Cleary deployed to Iraq where he served as both Company Fire Support Officer and Rifle Platoon Leader in Baghdad and Baquba. Captain Cleary deployed to Iraq a second time in 2009 as the Battalion Fire Support Officer for 4th Battalion 9th Infantry. Upon returning from Iraq, he attended the Field Artillery Captains Career Course at Fort Sill Oklahoma. At the conclusion of FACCC Captain Cleary was assigned to 1st Battalion 21st Field Artillery where he served as the battalion Operations Officer.

 

 Captain Cleary’s military schools include Officer Candidates School, the Field Artillery Basic Officer, and Captains Career Course. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with OLC, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, the Army Achievement Medal with OLC, the Select Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), and the Combat Action

 

CPT Cleary is married and they have one son.
