LTC Gary W. Beard, Jr.
LTC Gary Beard was commissioned a 2LT of Air Defense Artillery in May 1997 following graduation from the US Naval Academy with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Upon commissioning, he attended the ADA Officer Basic Course (SHORAD) and Airborne School en route to Fort Hood, TX.
Assigned to 4-5 ADA, 1st Cavalry Division, LTC Beard served as a Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle Platoon Leader, Battery Executive Officer, and Battalion Adjutant from April 1998 until September 2000. He then attended the Engineer Officer Advance Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. LTC Beard was next assigned as the commander of C/1-4 ADA, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, KS, from May 2001 until August 2003, deploying the unit to Baghdad, Iraq for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
LTC Beard was next assigned to Fort Irwin, CA as the ADA Observer/Controller for the COBRA Team from September 2003 until May 2005. He was then selected for the Joint Chiefs of Staff/Army Staff Intern program, graduating from Georgetown University in Jun 2006 and earning a MS in Public Policy Management.
During his utilization tour in the Pentagon, LTC Beard was assigned to the Joint Staff J6 (C4ISR) Directorate as an Action Officer until June 2007. He then served as the Aide-de-Camp to The Inspector General of the Army through July 2008. LTC Bead then attended ILE at Fort Leavenworth, KS.
LTC Beard reported to 1-1 ADA, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan in July 2009, serving as the Battalion S3 and then Battalion XO until May 2011. He then reported to Cp Arifjan, Kuwait as the XO to the Deputy Commanding General-Operations, USARCENT, supporting OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION NEW DAWN until June 2012. LTC Beard then reported to the Joint Integrated Air and Missile Defense Organization (JIAMDO), the Joint Staff J8, where he served as the Chief of the Interoperability Branch. LTC Beard reported to his current position as Deputy Commanding Officer of 69th ADA Brigade in August 2014.
LTC Beard’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal (4), National Defense Service Medal (2), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (3), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), and the Army Service Ribbon. His Unit Awards are the Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Valorous Unit Award, and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. Additionally, he is authorized to wear the Parachutist Badge, the Joint Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge
