Soldier of the 74th Engineer Company Recognized for Heroism in Iraq

On or about Oct. 30, 2005, the 74th Engineer Company was undergoing a boat patrol mission in Iraq when mortar rounds hit near the far shore. When the rounds started to hit, the boat moved from the far shore to the near shore where more mortar rounds hit. One round hit close to the boat and shrapnel was projected into the boat. Pfc. Jessica A. Poggi jumped on top of an Iraqi soldier to shield him from the shrapnel and in the process was cut under the left eye and temporarily lost hearing in the left ear. Her heroic effort saved the Iraqi soldier from harm and possibly his life. An Iraqi sergeant major and an Iraqi lieutenant colonel were injured in the attack.
