Soldiers of the 2nd Chemical Battalion, 180th Transportation Battalion and 553rd Corps Support Battalion, all of the 64th Corps Support Group, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), participated in the 2nd Chemical Battalion's Dragon Challenge here March 6 through 10.

The Challenge is a platoon competition designed to test warrior skills and consists of establishing standards for both individual and collective tasks and other events designed to encourage collective excellence, said Capt. Ginger G. Hammerquist, assistant S-3, training, of the 2nd Chemical Battalion.

The first two Red Dragon Challenges took place in December 2004 and early spring 2005. The two competitions tested warrior core tasks, physical fitness, operator-level preventive maintenance, individual marksmanship, land navigation and a 10-kilometer foot march. This year, the event was modified slightly to correspond with Iraqi-theater specific pre-deployment training requirements with the addition of Actions on Contact and Individual Readiness Training.

"Action on Contact was great, great training," said Sgt. Oswald A. Soto, a supply sergeant with the 289th Quartermaster Company. "The big picture is everything helps us get ready for war. They should do (the Challenge) more often."

Overall, Soldiers of the battalions competed in the Army Physical Fitness Test, hand grenade assault course, land navigation, AOC, IRT and a 10K foot march, said Hammerquist.

Platoons were ranked in each event according to individual scores received by its platoon-members. The platoon that ranked highest overall at the end of the competition was the winning platoon.

This year's winning platoon was from the 157th Quartermaster Company, led by 1st Lt. Jereon Hall, followed by the 46th Chemical Company's 1st Platoon, led by Staff Sgt. Jennie Olson, and the 31st Chemical Company's 1st Platoon, led by 2nd Lt. Jerrick Hunter.
