Soldiers of the Special Troops Battalion, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), participated in Military Operations on Urban Terrain Squad Training Exercises on the Hargrove Platoon MOUT Range here Sunday through Wednesday in anticipation of upcoming deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Soldiers trained on four separate tasks including controlling access to an installation, clearing obstacles while mounted, convoy operations in an urban setting, and evaluating and evacuating a casualty at night.

"With the training we're doing we're better prepared to deal with combat situations than we would be if we just spent all our time in our offices," said Pfc. Catheryn M. Shockey, a paralegal specialist with HHC, STB, 13th SC(E).

Sunday's training involved many of the SC(E)'s command team, including Col. Christine Gayagas, the chief of staff, and Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Fountain, the Sustainment Command's Command Sergeant Major.

Spc. Jomo K. Washington, an intelligence analyst with HHC, STB, 13th SC(E), said, "I thought it was great that the officers got out there and trained with us." Washington continued, "It gave us a new perspective and extra motivation to go out there and do our best."

Many Soldiers in the battalion will be deploying in support of OIF for the first time.

"This will be my first time deploying, and I really learned a lot from this training," said Staff Sgt. Tammie C. Mims, logistics NCO with HHC, STB, 13th SC(E).

Mims added, "It was an experience I've never had and the way they made it so realistic really opened my eyes."

Pfc. Jacobi C. Montgomery, an Intelligence Analyst with HHC, STB, 13th SC(E), said training in full gear with blank ammunition and simulated insurgents and civilians made the training feel like a real-life environment.

"We actually went to the field and put our skills into play in a realistic scenario," Washington said, "as opposed to conducting similar training in the motor pool."

"This is just the beginning," said Lt. Col. Terry Hildner, commanding officer of the Special Troops Battalion.

Hildner continued by saying the training over the next few months will prepare the battalion for its imminent deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
