21st CSH Success Story
13th COSCOM Public Affairs Office
The 21st Combat Support Hospital was responsible for providing resuscitative surgert, stabilization, and medical evacuation care to injured soldiers during OIF. The hospital made history by being the first CSH to conduct split-based operations during combat with a 164-bed hospital in Balad and an 84-bed hospital in Mosul, enabling them to provide care for the soldiers in an area greater than 250,000 square miles. The 21st CSH provided care for the victims of several MASCAL situations including the UN bombing in Baghdad, the downing of a CH-47 helicopter over Fallujah, and the treatment of 31 soldiers exposed to hazardous material while searching for weapons of mass destruction.
