29th Signal Battalion Helps Cut Ribbon on New Village School

LSA ANACONDA, BALAD, Iraq — Anaconda based soldiers joined local sheiks and community leaders to open a new primary school in Al Bu-Hassan near here Saturday.
The 29th Signal Battalion from Fort Lewis, Wash. sponsored the construction of the Al-Salam school, which was built from the ground up in about six months.
The Army provided the approximately $80K for construction but the planning and work was done by members of the community and local contractors.
Lt. Col. Daniel Kestle, 29th Sig. Bn. Commander and Command Sgt. Maj. Gerald Williams helped local Iraqi dignitaries cut the ribbon signifying the official completion of the building which next month will be full of 1st through 6th grade children.
The Al-Salam School is one of over 30 local infrastructure and water projects being managed by the 13th COSCOM civil affairs staff. Since January, the COSCOM has spent over $2.7 million to improve local schools, clinics and irrigation systems.
