The 28th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Medicine) and 583rd Medical Logistics Company, both under 13th Sustainment Command’s (E), 1st Medical Brigade, were activated at Guidon Field Sept. 19.

The newly formed units drew praise from the 1st Medical Brigade rear commander, Lt. Col. William S. Drennon, “I have 100 percent confidence in the commanders and first sergeants of the 28th Medical detachment and the 583rd Medical Logistics Company.”

There is no doubt the Soldiers will perform well, said Drennon.

The 28th Med. combat mission is to provide comprehensive veterinary medical, surgical and hospital care within the area of operations; also to provide veterinary support for civic action programs and conduct control programs in support of the overall health support system.

While the unit is very small in size, said Maj. Cheryl Sofaly, commander of the 28th Med., the unit has a very important mission.

“We have a vital mission providing medical care and support to the military working dogs,” said Sofaly. “We provide rapid expert surgical care.”

“We also provide veterinarian care to live stock and aid in disaster relief operations,” she added.

The 583rd commander, Cpt. Randy J. Garcia, emphasized the hard work his unit put into creating cohesive unit and shaping it into a professional logistical asset within the 1st Med. Brigade.

“583rd is the newest medical logistical company in 1st Med. Brigade, the unit has come together nicely and I am honored, excited and look forward to the upcoming challenges,” said Garcia.

The 583rd mission in combat is to provide medical supplies to and medical maintenance for all forward elements in the area of operations. The unit also provides single and multi-vision optical fabrication and repair.

The 583rd is slated to deploy in support of ongoing theater operations in 2007.
