Soldiers of the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) brought smiles to the faces of children at Fort Hood’s Chaffee Child Development Center May 21.
Soldiers and maintenance workers from the CDC assembled recreational equipment such as bicycles, tricycles, wheel barrels, scientific centers, wagons and other outside play equipment.
Carolyn Gatlin, facility director at the Chaffee CDC, said she was glad to have the Soldiers there to help.
The center received a lot of equipment and we knew we did not have the man power to assemble some of the equipment, so one of our parents offered to assist in getting the Soldiers to help us, said Gatlin.
Gatlin’s goal was to have two truck loads of equipment assembled and some of it distributed to the three other CDC’s on post.
The objective was to get all the equipment together and to get some of the equipment delivered to the other CDC’s and without their help, we could not accomplish this task, Gatlin explained.
The loan maintenance worker and vehicle operator at the center said he was relieved to receive a helping hand.
“Having the Soldiers out here cut the time by half,” said Jason Ingram, a Morale, Welfare and Recreation employee. “Otherwise I would be out here doing this all week.”
The Soldiers on hand said they were happy to assist the CDC.
“I feel great… it’s like helping my own kids, so I was happy to help,” said Spc. Youwn Brindou, a supply specialist with the 565th Quartermaster Company, Special Troops Battalion, 13th SC (E).
“We put all the toys together, the little cars, houses, storage sheds,” Brindou explained.
Brindou said the most satisfying of all is knowing that after completely assembling the equipment, it will be available to kids for years to come.
“I am very happy and because of what I’ve done, they will be able to play and run and have fun,” he said.
“It was great, being around the kids, made me smile,” Brindou said.
