The 13th Sustainment Command (Expenditionary) held a dedication and redesignation ceremony at the Soldier and Family Readiness Center in honor of the late Sgt. First Class Frankie Cruz (Retired) May 21.

The ceremony brought members of the Cruz family and the 13th SC (E) together to rename the Soldier and Family Readiness Center wing after Frankie S. Cruz, who was known to be an extraordinary individual and hardworking Soldier.

Col. Jim Rice, 1st Medical Brigade Commander and 13th SC (E) rear detachment commander spoke with great admiration for Cruz during his remarks at the ceremony.

“He was the very definition of Army Strong and our naming of this center is only a small token compared to his unyielding efforts to Soldiers and Families”, said Rice.

After 22 years of military service, Cruz deployed with III Corps to Iraq in 2004 as a civilian. Upon redeployment, he served 15 months as the 13th SC (E) Separate Brigades Reset Manager. When 13th SC (E) Headquarters deployed in late 2006, Cruz was also on hand to serve as the 13th SC(E) Facilities Engineer.

“He was all about doing the right thing for the Soldiers no matter what it was,” Rice said to family and friends of Cruz. “He threw his whole heart into whatever he was doing whether it was barracks renovation, renovation of the Company or Battalion Headquarters or the Family Readiness Center…he was all about getting the job done.”

With the help of Linda Cruz, Rice unveiled a plaque in honor of Cruz that will hang in the hall of the Soldier and Family Readiness Center. His presence will forever be memorialized on Ft Hood for future Soldiers to see what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.

Among the family members attending the ceremony was Juan Cruz, Cruz’s brother. Juan was scheduled to depart for Guam but because of the dedication ceremony, he rescheduled his trip to attend.

“A lot of my family served in the military and I think this is the greatest thing that ever happened to my family” said Juan.

An emotional Juan continued, “ The 13th SC(E) did something for the family, not only for Linda and the two kids, but for the people of Guam and we’ll remember this forever…I’m sure that every Soldier who passes through here will be remembered, not just Frankie but all the Soldiers”

Cruz is survived by his wife of 21 years Mrs. Linda Cruz, and two sons Anthony Ammaturo and Enrique Cruz.
