WALBURG, Tx. — One of the most important pre-deployment tasks for any unit is the selection of the people who will remain at home station running operations while the rest of the unit is forward conducting their wartime mission.
Making them feel part of the team is just as important.
13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) welcomed their Rear Detachment staff, along with other new members of the staff, during a hail and farewell at the World Famous Walburg German Restaurant, May 14.
According to Brig. Gen. Paul L. Wentz, the 13th ESC commander, with the headquarters deploying within the next couple of months, it was important to bring people who have the experience and knowledge necessary to assume all the staff functions we currently have within the 13th ESC headquarters.
Wentz said that having these former military members, whom come with the right expertise and knowledge, on board well before the deployment was a good news story for the command.
“These people are the ones who will ensure III Corps and the Fort Hood units we support on a daily basis are able to receive the same world-class support they are accustomed to during our deployment,” said Col. Carolyn Carroll, 13th SC(E) Chief of Staff.
“Having the right people in key staff positions allows us to focus on our mission in Iraq, rather than being worried or distracted about issues here at Ft. Hood,” Carroll said.
The command also bid farewell to two of its Soldiers; Maj. Susan Manion, the former Secretary of the General Staff, who is now assigned to the 4th Sustainment Brigade’s Special Troops Battalion as the executive officer, and to Master Sgt. Tessie Coe, who will be attending the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.
