FORT HOOD, Texas — Current and former Soldiers of the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), Central Texas civic leaders, and others participated in a best ball golf tournament at the Courses of Clear Creek here Sept. 16.

The tournament, which involved 15 teams, was the final fundraiser for the 13th SC(E) memorial pavilion, which 13th COSCOM Association President Kent Marquardt announced had been fully paid for.

Marquardt was on the winning team in the tournament whose members also included Col. Knowles Atchison, the deputy commanding officer of the 13th SC(E), and brothers Brad and Brett Turner of Temple.

After being announced the winners of the tournament with a score of 57, Atchison joked that he and Marquardt bought mulligans and a special pass to move up 300 yards on a Par 5 hole, and then watched the Turners in amazement.

The winning team received a $150 gift certificate to the Courses of Clear Creek Pro Shop.

In addition to a prize for the winning team, gift certificates were also given to the 5th place team and 9th place team. The reason for distributing the prizes in this manner was to give everyone an equal shot at winning a major prize, said Marquardt.

Mulligans were available at a cost of four for ten dollars. Mulligan tickets enabled golfers to take second, third, sometimes fifth shots from the same location if they didn’t like the result of their shot.

The mulligan tickets also doubled as door prize chances.

Sgt. Austin Nightingale, the administrative assistant to the operations officer with the 13th SC(E), participated in the tournament and sagely noted, “A bad day golfing beats a good day working, any time.”
