Fort Hood, Texas —Soldiers of the 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (expeditionary), cased the unit’s colors in a ceremony at Guidon Field here during a ceremony Feb. 11, in preparation for deployment in support of Operation New Dawn.

Originally, the brigade was scheduled to deploy to Kuwait, but the mission changed, and instead they’ll head to Iraq to support the final stages of the responsible drawdown of equipment and personnel.

Col. Ron Kirklin, the brigade commander and a Lexington, Miss. native, spoke for his Soldiers responding to the change in mission, "Tell us when and where you need us and we'll be ready."

Lt. Col. John Hickey, the Brigade Troops Battalion commander and Alexandria, Va. native, said, “I’m really excited about the opportunity to make a difference in Iraq.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Erik R.R. Frey, the brigade CSM and a Sioux Falls, S.D. native said, “It’s not just another deployment to Iraq, this is actually the last deployment.”

Frey, who deployed with the 4th SB as their CSM on the brigade’s previous deployment, stressed the importance of Family involvement, “Our Families are great supporters of this organization, and we have a lot of Family members who are actively involved in not only the [Family Readiness Groups] but all the other activities that the brigade holds.”

Family involvement and support was a major topic of the day.“Families are special,” said Kirklin, “We could not do what we do, without our Families backing us up.”

The 4th Sustainment Brigade will provide sustainment support to units throughout Iraq, and will help facilitate base closures and transfers, Kirklin said.

The brigade will be working with 29 separate active-duty, National Guard and Reserve support units from 16 states to accomplish these historic tasks, said Frey.
