2-20 Field Artillery Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan M. Velishka was born in Lawrence, MA in 1973. He is a 1997 graduate of the University of Maine where he was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer. He first entered service in 1994 when he joined the Maine Army National Guard as an Infantryman and started Active Federal Service in 1997 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Upon completion of the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, he served as a Fire Support Officer, Battery Executive Officer and Commander of the 25th Field Artillery Detachment (Target Acquisition) in the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. After the Field Artillery Advance Course, Jon served as the Battalion S-2 and Assistant Operations Officer in 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery and the 1-66 Armor Battalion Fire Support Officer (OIF 1). While deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom he assumed command of HHB, 4-42 FA. Upon redeployment from OIF 1, Jon assumed command of Bravo Battery, 4-42 FA. In June of 2005, Jon and his family moved to Fort Irwin, California where he served as an Observer/Controller at the National Training Center where he held various positions as a Fire Support Trainer (Wolf) and the NTC’s Negotiations/Engagements trainer. In 2008 he was assigned to the 75th Fires Brigade as the Brigade Operations Officer in Tikrit, Iraq where he served in support of Multi-National Division – North, both the 1st Armored Division and 25th Infantry Division. Upon redeployment Jon became the Battalion Executive Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery at Fort Sill. In June 2010 Jon deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan and later Kuwait where he served for a year as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General, Third U.S. Army, USARCENT. After redeploying Jon attended the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. His latest assignment was as a Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff of The Army, Washington D.C.
LTC Velishka’s military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, U.S. Army Airborne and Air Assault Schools, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and College of Naval Command and Staff. LTC Velishka’s Civilian education includes a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership, Webster University and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, Naval War College.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Army Staff Badge. LTC Velishka has been married to his Bride Tiffany for 17 years and they have two children.
