COL Cameron Cantlon
75th Colonel of the Regiment, 3d Cavalry Regiment



COL Cameron Cantlon was commissioned as an Armor Officer in 1993 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  He served as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in 2nd Battalion, 72nd Armor with the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea.  Subsequently, he served as a Troop XO and Squadron Maintenance Officer in the Division Cavalry Squadron (2-1 Cav and 1-10 Cav) in the 2nd Armored (reflagged as 4th Infantry) Division in Fort Hood, TX.


 As a captain, he served as the Battalion S4, Tank Company Commander, and the HHC Commander in 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor at Fort Riley, Kansas.  Later, he served as an Assignment Officer at U.S. Army Personnel Command (PERSCOM) in Alexandria, VA.

As a major, he was first assigned to Area support Group – Kuwait as the Brigade S3.  Following CGSC, Cam was assigned to 3d ACR in Fort Hood, Texas.  He served as the Squadron XO in 2/3 ACR (Sabre) at Fort Hood, TX to train a freshly reorganized squadron for an OIF deployment.  In Iraq, he served as the Squadron S3 and XO in 2/3 ACR in Diyala and Ninewa Provinces.  While in Diyala, he worked directly with 4-2 SBCT, 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Stryker), and 2/1 AD.  On redeployment, he was assigned as the Regiment XO.

Cam was promoted to lieutenant colonel, and served as the Deputy Commanding Officer for 3d ACR until he transitioned to the First Team and commanded a Reconnaissance Squadron (6-9 Cav) in 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. During this command, the unit deployed to Iraq for Operation New Dawn and worked with 2/1 ID, 3d ACR, and 1/1 CAV in Baghdad and in Wasit Province. 6-9 Cav completed the transition of Wasit Province to Iraqi control in November, 2011 and was the last unit to leave this province and transition authority to the Iraqi Government.

Following command, Cam worked as the Executive Officer to the III Corps and Fort Hood Commander. Then, Cam and his family PCS’d to Carlisle, PA to attend the Army War College.

Most recently, Cam and his family returned to Fort Hood, TX to take command of the 3d Cavalry Regiment.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, several Meritorious Service Medals, and numerous other service and achievement awards. COL Cantlon is a graduate of the Armor Officer’s Basic and Advanced Courses, SPLC, CAS3, CGSC, and the US Army War College and holds Masters Degrees from Central Michigan University and the War College.
