1SG George H. Bayer Jr. a native Texan was born in Alpine, Texas, but grew up in Brackettville, Texas. He enlisted into the United States Army in August 1989, and attended Basic and AIT at Fort Knox, Kentucky as a 63E.
1SG Bayer’s first assignment was with Delta Troop 10th Cav, 194th Separate Armor Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky as a Abrams Tank System Maintainer. In 1993 he then PCSd to Fort Hood, Texas assigned to 3-67th Armor, 2AD where he served as a Senior M1 Abrams Hull Systems Mechanic and later on as a Maintenance Team Shop Foreman. In October of 1997 he then PCSd to Camp Casey, Korea where he was assigned to A/ 1-72 Armor, 2ID and served as a line company maintenance shop foreman. In October 1998, he then PCSd back to Fort Hood, Texas and was assigned to HHC 3-8 Cav. 1CD where he served as a Recovery Team NCOIC deploying in 2001 to Kuwait under Operation Intrinsic Action for one year. Later he was assigned as a Combat Repair Team Chief for D/3-8 Cav. In 2004 his Company was cross attached to 2-7 Cav. 1CD and deployed to OIF 2. Upon returning to Fort Hood from deployment, his company stayed 2-7 Cav and was later reflagged as 1-12 Cav. deploying again in OIF 06-07 with E/ FSC 1-12 Cav as the Battalion Maintenance Control Sergeant. Upon return to Fort Hood he then PCSd in 2008 to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait assigned to the 2-401st AFSB as Quality Assurance Inspector. While in Kuwait he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF from August 2008 to April 2009 assigned to the 3-401st AFSB as the Support, Plans, and Operations NCOIC. Upon completion of the assignment he returned to Kuwait and continued to serve one more year with the 2-401st AFSB as Contracting Officer Representative overseeing the Army’s contractor maintaining the Army’s Preposition Stock 5. In 2010, he then PCSd returning to Fort Hood assigned to the 41st Fires Brigade as the Brigade Senior Maintenance Supervisor. On 4 April 2011 he was re-assigned as First Sergeant Bravo Company 589th BSB, 41st Fires Brigade.
His military training includes the United States Army Advance Noncommissioned Officer Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Contracting Officer Representative Course, Motor Pool Operations Course, Hazardous Material Handling Course, M1A2 SEP Tank Certification Course, Recovery Operations Course, and NBC Officer Course.
1SG Bayer’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2OLC); Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC); Army Commendation Medal (5OLC); Army Achievement Medal (7OLC); Good Conduct Medal (7th Award); National Defense Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; NCO Professional Development (Number 3); Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon (Number 4); NATO Medal; Presidential Unit Citation; Valorous Unit Award (1OLC); Meritorious Unit Commendation; and the Combat Action Badge. 1SG Bayer is also a member of The Ordance Order of Samuel Sharpe.
