COL John W. Leffers

479th FA Commander 

COL John Leffers hails from Utica, New York. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Infantry from the United States Military Academy in 1991 with his first assignment as a Rifle Platoon Leader in 1-9 IN, 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, California. Later he served as a Support Platoon Leader and Rifle Company Executive Officer in the 9th Infantry Regiment at Fort Lewis, Washington where he deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as part of OPERATION SEA SIGNAL.

As a captain he was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany in June 1996 where he initially served as the Brigade Logistics Officer (S4) and deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of OPERATION JOINT GUARD. Later he commanded both a Bradley Rifle Company and a Headquarters Company in 1-26 IN, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division and deployed to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as part of OPERATION ABLE SENTRY

Following his graduation from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2002, he was assigned as a G3 Battle Major in I Corps at Fort Lewis. Later he was re-assigned to 3-21 IN, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 25th Infantry Division where he served as a Battalion Operations Officer (S3), Battalion Executive Officer, and Brigade Executive Officer with a 12 month combat tour in OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM III.

After he completed his assignment with 1/25 SBCT in 2006, he was assigned as an Observer/Controller to the National Training Center (NTC) at Ft Irwin, California where he served as the Light Infantry Task Force Operations Officer Trainer, the Brigade Deputy Commanding Officer/Brigade Executive officer Trainer, and the Chief of the NTC Leader Training Program (LTP).

 He took command of 1-38 IN, 4/2 SBCT at Fort Lewis, Washington in August 2008, and during this tour he deployed his Battalion to OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 09-10. Following Battalion Command, he was assigned to I Corps where he served as the Chief of the I Corps Commanding General’s Initiatives Group and deployed to Afghanistan as part of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM from July 2011 to June 2012. After his deployment to Afghanistan, he attended the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania where he graduated in June 2013.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Parachutist Badge. COL Leffers’ military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Science Degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and a Master of Arts Degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
